"Can't you take a hit from a little guy"

A quote I am not surprised to hear from the Saints. In an emotionally charged game the 3rd place Saints and 4th place Hosers battled to a 3 - 3 tie.

The first period had lots of back and forth Hockey. Tied into a lot of action for the Fans that came out to watch a late Sunday night tilt. The action got started in the first period when Shane Meahan was sent in on a breakaway by a pass up the middle from Jason Sanchez. At the end of his shift it was all Meahan could do to get the shot off while being slashed from behind sending him on a Penalty Shot. On the Shot Saints Goalie Jon Gammel stood his ground and kicked out the left pad to keep the game all tied up at 0-0. Sanchez scored down low with 8:08 left in the first to open the scoring. Then with 2:28 left he scored his second of the night on the Powerplay due to a High Stick dished out by Saints Will Ansell. Ansell also got an extra 10 minutes for telling the ref how he felt about the call propelling him to 36 Penalty minutes on the season. Trevor Evans of the Hosers took his 4th Penalty minute of the year with his tripping penalty.

The second was another good period with the Saints scoring early and late in the period to tie it up. Both goals were scored by newcomer Tyler Heatly playing in only his second game of the season. Brad Lewis put in an unassisted marker with 1:18 left on the clock to put the Hosers ahead for the second time of the game. The only penalty action in the second was a couple offsetting minors to Hosers Karl Gielau and Saints Tyler Heatly for roughing. Those 2 minutes have brought Karl back up to tied for the penalty minute lead with Arnie McDonald.

The third period was exactly what we have grown to love in this league. Clean Hockey, Great Goaltending, Team play, and one team coming from behind to tie it up. Jason Worrall tied it up in the first minute of the third, and then both teams rallied around their goalies in perfect defensive fashion to force on OT frame.

Sadly the energy and excitement of the game took a turn for the worst in OT. 40 seconds into OT Joey Doell lost an edge and took the feet out from under Hosers Goalie Kevin Macintyre, Doell apologized, skated to the box, and the game carried on. Into the final minute of play in the OT frame Hosers Defenseman Karl Gielau was blatantly hit from behind by Saints Will Ansell in a move no one was surprised to see. After the hit Bodies gathered against the boards and words were exchanged, but the officials were able to keep the peace and diffuse the situation. The classless nature of Ansell was made clear as he skated away from the situation exclaiming "Can't you take a hit from a little guy".

Now I know those of us that have played the Saints have seen this behaviour before. The real shocker came after the game was over and Saints Captain Bobby Theal called Ansell on it and said it was a "Hit from Behind". Maybe there is hope for the Saints afterall. Lets hope Ansell sees the light after his suspension.
